There are so many silly cat cartoons and postcards from that time, yes often with idiosyncratic language and grammar. Another one from my collection. "I 'specs I growed!" (mailed 1910).

People often bring up some of the shocking anecdotes in Didionās essay, but I think part of her point is just how boring most of the reporting is, and what shocks her is that the shocking things just sit in among all the very boring ones and no one on the street distinguishes them.

One thing I donāt understand about this is that, from what I can tell, the journal hadnāt actually accepted it? It seems to have got R&R, & it could be the editors were using that to ask about exactly the sorts of oddities people are pointing to as red flags? I donāt know. Tho I fully agree itā¦
