NEW PAPER, NEW THREAD! 👀 We collected insects in creeks polluted with raw sewage. 🤢 Microplastics in caddisflies were once rare. But now, in some creeks, more than half of all cases include artificial material! 🤯 A shitty thread on plastics and poop, thankfully, without the smell of it 💩 1/x 🧵👇

Please enjoy this ridiculously cute butterfly, which was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. It's in the butterfly family called metalmarks (Riodinidae). Males, like these, have reduced front legs and perch using only the rear 4 (females can use all 6). Sarota acantus; Costa Rica 🐙🌿 #insects

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have discovered a GROUNDBREAKING new treatment for aggressive breast cancer with a 100% SURVIVAL RATE. By combining chemotherapy with Olaparib (Lynparza) BEFORE surgery, EVERY patient who received the protocol survived the CRITICAL three-year post-treatment period. 🧪🧵⬇️

A new study details the evolutionary change of Anna's Hummingbirds, finding their beaks have grown longer and more tapered to get the most from common feeders.

House Republicans passed their bill that’d rip health insurance from millions and take food assistance away from millions including households with kids as young as 7 in the largest Medicaid and SNAP cuts in history - while giving giant tax cuts to the rich. Thread on the next steps of the process.

Butterfly populations are crashing through the floor. One way people can help is rewilding their gardens. At the very least, mowing lawns less often. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Today, over 20,000 bee species are buzzing for #WorldBeeDay 🐝 Bees & other pollinators keep 80% of crop and wild flowering plants alive. Yet, 1 in 10 bee, hoverfly, and butterfly species are now at risk of extinction in the EU.

A hummingbird has built a nest on my balcony and I am already deeply emotionally attached 🪺

Corgis have an extremely low center of gravity and the density of a dead star. PERFECT for skateboarding! 😇

While they are indeed common, I really love the Common Tody-Flycatchers. They constantly make their little chip calls and they're so tiny and bright! They also love to build nests right near houses, probably because there are fewer predators around humans. This was at @tapirvalley.bsky.social #birds

A wee respite.

The first thing I noticed was how fast this swallow flew. When it landed, I noticed the white cheeks and green back. I was thrilled to realize that it was a Violet-green Swallow. They are stunning! #birds #photography #birdphotography #birding

Please enjoy these shelter pups reacting to getting a kiss. Some are bashful, some have butterflies, and all deserve approximately 10 million more. 14/10 for all

Wow, I found a Scarlet Tanager this evening! This is maybe a once a year bird for me. So exciting. 🪶
