Wow. I've been aware of bot farms for a long time, but seeing the set-up irl really drives your point home.

Public nursing homes=Medicaid. There is a lot of talk about folks who "manage their assets" in order to not lose everything (Medicaid allows very few assets), but the much more common scenario is the senior citizen who doesn't have assets. Those infirm elderly are in Medicaid-funded nursing homes.

That's honestly kind of sad. I loved the earnestness of those Welcome Centers... I'd learn a little something about the State, and typically they had beautiful examples of indigenous trees & flora planted on site too.

Road tripping in the US, each time we crossed State lines on the Interstate, there was nearly always an offramp to a groovy Welcome Center that gave out free maps for the State we were entering...used those a lot. I wonder if they still give out maps?

When I was in public high school, we were required to take "Government" courses. One option was called Current Events and kids chose the class because it sounded easy. It wasn't, but our very good teacher taught us how to really ingest and analyze daily news, & why our sustained attention mattered.

When I was in college, there was a little hole in the wall bar down the road just off campus, and they sold a deep-fried hot dog with a cold can of Coke for $1.00 on weekdays. Those hot dogs were manna to this broke student.

When you ask who's this for, it's for dark money funders who privately buy tens of thousands of books to make someone like Tapper a best seller IF he writes what they want him to write & pushes it into news cycles. It appears that was just fine with Jake & he is carrying out his end of the bargain.

I'm more concerned about the potential over time for every LLMs' output to be manipulated by its owners. A hammer manufactured by a company that wants to sell more trowels cannot tell you that you should be using a trowel to hammer nails.

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Union Army officer in 1855. The phrase "Under God" was inserted by President Eisenhower nearly 100 years later in 1954 (the modern era). It's good to remember that.

Excited to find you here on Bluesky. Do you have a ko-fi or "buy me a coffee" account that you can link to your social media accounts? They're good options for those of us who enjoy your content, but are better able to give tips than to subscribe to a monthly service (I'm sweating that comma btw).

I understand your point (though I would agree it's more living expectations than standards). That said, there is a huge gap in affordable housing for families that would be much better met by building in this older vein, ie. 1100-1300 sq ft with a bath and a half, three bedrooms & a bit of yard.
