It also occupies the space @andy.luckypaper.co talked about, with several key singleton breaks in an otherwise Singleton environment (Fiery Temper, Rootwalla/Mongrel, Spider Spawning, etc.)

Zach curates this cube by managing the balance to a few core pillars of gameplay that should be fun and satisfying - Spider Spawning, Frantic Search --> Fiery Temper. This cube is great even though Zach refuses to cut Murktide Regent!

The second is @improphilo.bsky.social's UMA+ Cube: cubecobra.com/Cube/overvie...
Featured at the very first CubeCon, this cube is Zach's love-letter to the UMA draft format, while making some big changes (particularly changing white from Heroic to Artifacts).

First was my #1 cube of CubeCon 2024, Ikoria at Home. cubecobra.com/cube/overvie...
I've said this before, but this is a masterclass in making the fun thing the good thing. Additions from across the multiverse push the power level, but in a way that feels deeply resonant to Ikoria's gameplay.

Date (that I didn’t know was a date): Little Miss Sunshine…is sold out. You can see A Scanner Darkly starting 15m into the movie and the only 2 seats together are far left Front row. You fucking idiot.

Maybe some minor tweaks, but this cube pretty close to its current form will be available at Cube for a Cause ( @cubeforacause.upkeepnewyork.com ) in August! Not expecting to many swashbucklers in EoE (at least not ones with the right vibes).

I ended up 1-2 with not quite Storm and not quite Self-Discard. Could have won another match, but Captain Howler got Gyruuda’d twice and beat me to death!

Your sponge propaganda is not welcome here.

Oh this isn't meant to be about being old, it's just what I hear whenever I think of a Donkey Kong game. Which I guess is kind of about being old, huh.

Pushes up his nerd glasses. "Well actually..." (7th and Masques NM foils are well above the other two, and Alpha has no TCG Player Sales so it doesn't show up on top page.)

Deck was a blast to play and won the Rakdos Mirror in the finals!

Timberwatch Elf was a fucking problem in that format.

Or you can keep it in the family and flip stuff to @themanavault.bsky.social.

TOA will consistently have good and fair prices, but they also tend to have a great selection of particularly higher end stuff, so if there's things you want to trade into, they're a consistently good place to flip stuff. They also tend to allow reservations at shows which can be clutch.

It's not a generic "Sci-Fi cube" - it's Universes Within's representation of Science across the planes (Robotics/Artificers on Avishkar, Stitchers in Innistrad, etc.) On paper, looks very well-designed, mechanically and aesthetically. This would be very high on my list to draft if I made it.

Absolutely. My Old Border Battlebox is meant to be very low frills, but still needs dice for counters because I will not cut phantoms or Spiritmonger. The whole thing fits in a sidewinder and I will not find another solution just so I can play 1-2 cards.

Most commonly in the form of additional counters on creatures, creating tokens, or both. Without those, essentially the primary midrange category will be defined by rate and haste more than anything else, and I'm not sure enough of those to bridge the gap at the highest power level.
comment in response to

Quick look seemed like ~150 cards would need to swap (most noticeably, Sagas, which have counters). The challenge with bar cubes at high power is that most of the way that aggressive and midrange creatures have come to compete with traditional powered strategies is through snowballing advantage...

At least it’s not Kingdom Hearts. The first game is called Kingdom Hearts. The last game is called Kingdom Hearts 3. There are 22 Kingdom Hearts games. One of them is a literal fraction.

Don't know how to build Tamesha, so probably going deep on Samwise.

Red Lobster buscuits don’t even belong on this pack they’re on such another level. Wild power outlier here.

If you have your cube on CubeCobra, you can find a recommendation algorithm as part of the Analysis section. This will recommend cards that aren't in your list based on lists playing similar cards. It won't recommend 1x1 swaps, but could have some good inspiration

Actually. I'm an idiot. I love Adventure and it's definitely my more favorite modal mechanic. Boomer brained mistake.

I think Kicker is more fun because you're usually getting Effect+ vs. different effect altogether. I am a big fan of the "When You Cycle this..." triggers.
Favorite 3 kicker cards?! Very hard.
-Jilt (waiting on the new art reprint)
-Burst Lightning
-Thornscape Battlemage

Least: Cleave. It's just the absolute worst. Super confusing to parse, wildly un-fun.
Favorite: IDK, maybe Kicker is a bit more fun than cycling?

Also, shout out to @r3id.bsky.social for the inspiration for the $360 price budget. Check out his interpretation of the restriction here! cubecobra.com/cube/overvie...

The draft of this cube went today pretty much exactly as I expected - some broken stuff happened, it was fun and not necessarily too frustrating because so many of the cards were powerful, but ultimately still in dialogue with each other.
comment in response to

I pulled together a list of all cards that had been in the last 15 years of the MTGO Cube, sorted by price, to see the cards that were relatively inexpensive and have been considered "in dialogue" with Power in the past, and so many of these cards were both great and less than $1 thanks to commander

It was super eye-opening and very fun to check the cheap cube against things like the MTGO Vintage Cube, or @aquaone.bsky.social's Vintage cube and see such a significant overlap in cards.
comment in response to

At the same time, I also think a lot about the accessibility of #mtgcube from that lens, because Magic can be a very expensive hobby. I first built the Cheap Cube as an on-ramp to playing cube for someone who maybe has owned a few precons, has a modest collection, and wanted a starting point.
