New Review Split Image from 1982

New Review At the brand new Retro Review newsletter: 1981's Ticket to Heaven Subscribe at thumbsdown.substack.com

SIGHT AND SOUND: The Cheap Detective ☆☆☆ Parody mash- up of Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon. Peter Falk plays a private eye who has cops trying to finger him for the murder of his business partner and numerous women interested in him. Great cast includes Ann Margret, John Houseman, Madeleine Kahn.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Lifeforce ☆☆☆ A big budget sci-fi horror movie from low budget Cannon Films, the feature stars French actress Mathilda May as an intergalactic vampire set loose on Earth and Steve Railsback as a Space Shuttle Captain haunted and beguiled by May. Nicely directed by Tobe Hooper.

First Mini Review: Airplane II-The Sequel. Subscribe at thumbsdown.substack.com

SIGHT AND SOUND: Psycho II ☆☆☆☆ A first rate, nicely written sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's classic. Anthony Perkins returns as Norman Bates to his old home and the Bates Motel after spending years in a mental hospital. The film turns Norman into a tormented victim instead of the victimizer. Superb.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Dragnet ☆☆☆ Silly but enjoyable comedy take on the classic Dragnet show as done as a middling budget studio film. Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks make a fine team as LAPD detectives investigating odd robberies around town. Terrific cast includes Christopher Plummer and Elizabeth Ashley.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Heartbreakers ☆☆☆ Nicely moody, observant drama about two friends, one a photographer (Peter Coyote) and the other the heir to a clothing company (Nick Mancuso). Well directed feature with fine performances by Mancuso and Coyote and fine work by Carol Wayne as an art model.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Amazon Women on the Moon ☆☆☆ Hilarious and sometimes inventive sketch comedy/ parody film that pokes fun at 50s B movies and late night TV commercials. With a cast that includes Carrie Fisher, Rosanna Arquette, David Alan Grier, Sybil Danning and Corinne Wahl. An overlooked gem.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Farewell My Lovely ☆☆☆ 1970's adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel starring Robert Mitchum as private eye Philip Marlowe who finds himself in danger when taking the case from an ex-con looking for his old girlfriend. Mitchum is perfect as the world weary exhausted Marlowe.

SIGHT AND SOUND:Airplane II: The Sequel ☆☆☆ Forgotten but enjoyable follow up to 1980's smash hit parody Airplane. Robert Hays and Julie Haggerty return to try to guide the first commercial Lunar Shuttle to safety. William Shatner steals the movie as a maniacal lunar base commander. Must see movie.

New essay On The Usual Suspects At Final Cut. allanier.substack.com

SIGHT AND SOUND: The Usual Suspects ☆☆☆☆ A tricky, skillful, conniving film about a heist gone horribly wrong and a US Customs Agent trying to find answers by talking to a survivor of the botched job. A mesmeric, utterly beguiling crime thriller with great performances from a talented cast.

SIGHT AND SOUND: The Seduction ☆ A photographer (Andrew Stevens) obsesses over a local TV News Anchor (Morgan Fairchild) playing a cat and mouse game. A badly written film that comes off visually looking more like a mundane Cable TV movie with an ending so ridiculous I howled with laughter.

SIGHT AND SOUND: Year of the Dragon ☆ Set in NYC's Chinatown, Dragon pits tough guy cop Mickey Rourke against smooth, elegant criminal boss John Lone. The film is littered with racist stereotypes, an uneven narrative and some terrible performances. Avoid this movie at all costs.
