a Chris Murphy-retweeting pope. The ResistLibs really do have the Mandate of Heaven

THE AMERICAN CENTURY IS OVER THE ILLINOIS CENTURY IS JUST BEGINNING

Shocked Pikachu face: Training AI to align to human preferences was a bad idea. Nobody could have seen this coming. At least when you ignore datapoints like: Climate Change, authoritarian populism, drug addictions, high fructose corn syrup Principles > preferences arstechnica.com/information-...

One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

my takeaway from reading this is that i have to assume that every half-competent intelligence agency in the world has an almost real-time glimpse into what the white house and the pentagon are doing

Honestly, put the hood back on this one.

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

“I’m the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks. It felt like I had been kidnapped. I was stuck in a freezing cell without explanation despite eventually having lawyers and media attention. Yet, compared with others, I was lucky” 3/19/25 www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Figured I’d hop on here today for the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. With everything going on right now, it’s easy to feel like regular folks can’t make a difference – but the ACA is a reminder that change is possible when we fight for progress.

“The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters.” — Antonio Gramsci

NEW: Family of Mahmoud Khalil just released footage of his arrest “Stop resisting” “He’s not resisting” Agents seen continuing to ignore Mahmoud’s wife as she asks basic questions

When AOC and Adam Kinzinger are both furious at Chuck Schumer, for the exact same reason, maybe you need to give up the idea this is just a backlash coming from far left activists.

Trudeau: "I want to speak first directly to the American people. We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally. We don't want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to rise dramatically."

It’s surreal that I have to go to a foreign leader to hear someone describe the full derangement and malignancy of my own president in plain language, because our own “free press” and opposition leaders won’t do it. Bravo Trudeau

Trudeau: We’re probably going to keep booing the American anthem. But let me tell Americans, we're not booing you. We're booing a policy that is designed to hurt us.  But we're Canadian. We're going to fight. And we're going to win.

Farmers sue USDA for removal of climate data pages. “Farmers are on the front lines of climate change. Purging climate change web pages doesn’t make climate change go away. It just makes it harder for farmers to adapt.” -Jeff Stein, Eathjustice www.motherjones.com/environment/...

🗣️MUST-WATCH: “It will only take a few of you to protect it… WHERE DO YOU STAND?” A @RepHarshbarger constituent on Obamacare presses her to protect the health care of millions — as she pretends not to know Project 2025 is targeting it Full: www.instagram.com/reel/DGsx4ck...

It occurs to me that not everyone knows how to get to Sugarbush, the ski resort JD Vance is visiting. It’s a great mountain, but even if you don’t ski, it’s a beautiful drive to get there, especially on a clear day like tomorrow. You can get directions here. You’re welcome!

Welcome to the RFK Jr Era of Public Health.

After 1,000 National Park Service employees were abruptly fired on February 14, staff banded together to signal “dire distress” by draping an upside-down American flag from the 3,000-foot summit of Yosemite’s iconic El Capitan monolith.

He is admitting that he doesn’t want lawyers to stop him from breaking the law. No one would stop him from issuing lawful orders, so this has to be about unlawful ones.

Hegseth says firing of top military lawyers was about making sure "they don't exist to be roadblocks to anything that happens."

A big part of why we're in this mess is that Democrats are weak and hapless. They aren't willing to fight for -- or even uphold -- the values they say they believe in. The other reason is that most people are dumb as shit and submerged in constant algorithmic propaganda

The public hates what Elon is doing, turn up the heat

Firing all of the JAGs (Judge Advocates General)—the top lawyers in each service branch—is just as bad as, if not worse than, firing (most of) the Joint Chiefs.

As AI models grow in size, their values seem to increasingly converge on the same preferences, whether the model is made by OpenAI or Musk’s X or China’s DeepSeek Not everyone will like resulting AI preferences, so value engineering is likely to become a topic of discussion arxiv.org/abs/2502.08640

Military Brass and JAG purge is very ominous

The “brain-drain” in the US will be immense. And that is the point.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

This will send shock waves through academia. It’s not just about the students but also the labs trying to keep research programs going. A personnel gap could set things back significantly.

Pay attention to this. Replacing JAGs with loyalists enables whatever orders Trump and Hegseth issue to be interpreted as lawful.

How it started. How it’s going

I’m telling you @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social, please watch this. This is the energy. Not egg prices and book tours and strongly worded letters. It’s time to take the gloves off.

Political liberalism has a lot of flaws but one of the cool things about it is how it's constructed around the insight that monarchy is a fundamental affront to human dignity 👍

Democrats, ARE YOU LISTENING???

call me old fashioned but i am not rooting for the asteroid

True story: a few years ago, I was being interviewed by a reporter for the New York Times. I mentioned the history of eviction statutes and how they tied into Jim Crow. The reporter asked "what's Jim Crow?" When I explained, the reporter didn't believe me and said the US wouldn't do that.

Trumpists will continue to be furious at any dissent no matter how much power they steal. That’s because the administration is premised on pathological insecurity. They’re shitty people, they know it, and they will never stop resenting being seen as shitty people.

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.
