After 4. Bb2, black can only push the a-pawn and white can only shuffle bishop between a1 and b2. Race to zugzwang. If 4. Ba1 instead, white runs out of moves first and loses.

University leaders should not be assuming a defensive posture. They should be at the forefront of a full legal and public relations attack against those blocking child cancer research, limiting student opportunities, or delaying vital community projects. Get on the local news and call them out.

These retreats are seen as weakness. The American university is an incredibly successful institution. It is responsible for a great share of American upward mobility, our science and technology prowess, and provides a necessary space to protect unpopular ideas. It is the envy of the world.
