Fifteen years ago I was banned from my school library for challenging what was and wasn’t allowed on the shelves. Straight sex scenes depicting unsafe sex? Totally fine. Queerness in any form, even a student? Unacceptable.
They will turn us into a morality question if we don’t push back.

I work in spaces where I am often working with youth who get to use their pronouns at work for the first time safely, and so I ask a lot of ‘okay but what set makes you happiest to hear?’ And that often leads to a real nice chat! I think framing it more as what offers euphoria would benefit us all.

I appreciate it all though! I think stories like this are important because a lot of the community forgets that any rigid definitions will leave folks out… especially intersex folks. Even with my own gender exploration, I came to it late because I didn’t fit into those more rigid definitions.

!
Are questions about this okay?
I think asking for pronouns is sometimes treated as What Is Correct For You where in public spaces and different groups what we end up using is closer to what is comfy and safe for you in this specific space… would love to ask but only if that’s okay with you!

(I also think wanting trans folk to be easily categorized and defined is something that cis folk want so they can feel comfortable. Remember that even the base binary we work from comes from colonial ideals. And if it works for your identity, that’s fine! But let’s not limit others to it)

Also, while we’re talking indie, can I just say… meerkat is a small press that does the damn work and supports the heck out of their authors. Check out their whole catalogue, it’s a pretty cool space

Can I interest you in some space mermaids?
(And found family and queerness and revolution but the space mermaids feel like the best place to start)

AI might be able to generate stories, but it will never be a storyteller. That’s the difference. That’s where the soul sits. In storytelling.

THAT BEING SAID. I am teaching two writing workshops at a school for IDAHOT! Encouraging young queer kids that their stories are worth telling is one of my absolute favourite things to do.

I think stuff like this can so easily get dismissed as ‘that’s the bare minimum’ but breaking cycles of mistreatment often requires real intention, and it’s not easy. It can really be like learning a new language, because folks weren’t taught how to interact kindly with the world. I admire that.
