I'm so glad 1 WTC was named that instead of the stupid "freedom tower" name they were going to give it. Someone with sense was like.. "Yeah let's not do this."

The Catholic Church doing a heel-face turn was definitely not on my bingo card for this decade but I'll take it!

The PulseCom device got me really curious, so I looked it up. The thing basically lets you send a bunch of DS1/T1 circuits over fiber. So they can keep legacy stuff like this SLC96 going after retiring copper plant. I do wonder how long they're going to keep the old network going.

Ahh yes. I took these photos the other day, seems like a good place to share. :) (who knows how much longer this stuff will be around. Building is already 99% VOIP)

This is especially the case since so many churches are in residential areas already. You see a grid of tiny houses, then right next to it a tiny church on a VAST expanse of unused land that can easily be another 20 homes. Make them sell that shit.
comment in response to post
I'm all for this. Churches like to hoard land because they don't have to pay property tax. Taxing them properly would force them to sell off what they're not using and we could build more housing.

Damn, I identify with Washu so much more these days than I used to. A fellow introvert and I SO want my own pocket universe paradise I can retreat to!!

What if you're "lagging behind on AI" because you want nothing to do with it, and would much prefer that all GenAI/LLM infrastructure be on fire? That's kinda where I'm at.

Sometimes you just have to accept that the good days of something are behind us, and move on. Enjoy the stuff that has been made already, and be happy that we had it, rather than being upset at yearning for more. Us Browncoats have been doing this for years. It'll be okay.

I was so happy I got to see that machine and everything else at the museum back in April. I was in awe at everything I saw and keep thinking back on it now and then. Ya'll do amazing work. :)

All the more reason to use it, understanding Linux will help you understand operating systems in general more thoroughly which helps a lot in a CS career.

Thank you! It's so sad when people immediately turn off replies anytime a post of theirs gets busy. We're here to talk to each other, even if the format is sometimes awkward.

But seriously, I miss those days. It felt like all the furries on the net were mostly in one place. I remember con badges with our FurryMUCK names on them. Someone (not me) had a shirt with their DBref on it, like... Zorin(#53943PBJXM1) MUCKs were such a FUN culture; I wish it hadn't fizzled.

At this point I treat AI like heroin. Never, not even once.

I look at it this way, if my best friend of 30 years suddenly started going on a hateful rampage I'd do everything I can to try to turn it around and bring him back to sanity. I'd eventually have to give up like Fry did, but I sure as hell would try.

Yeah it was owned by a slumlord. Cost almost $300 a month to air condition in the summer because of how poorly sealed and insulated it was. Was so happy when he was able to get out of there.
comment in response to post
Insulation, not installation. Why do I sometimes type the wrong word? That wasn't autocorrect. Brains are weird mushy things.

I'm surprised the smart dishes you had don't have that feature! It'd be so trivial to implement. :(
comment in response to post
Yeah. I'm loving it, it's so hilariously fun. Going to watch it all the way through to the recent season. Skipping the TV series stuff that I already saw back in the 00s on Cartoon Network.

The Nicki French version? That one really slaps and is an absolute favorite of mine. :)

It's been abandoned in place. That was a fiber-fed remote terminal that handled some number of analog phone lines and DSL. The fiber has been rerouted and is now just normal modern fiber to the home internet. I do wish they'd remove their old junk though.

I just wish investors would wake up and stop funding it. We could be rid of this garbage within a few months if that happened.

It's like.. why is this so hard? Processing power is SO cheap and vast that there is no valid reason to require cloud servers for something like this to work, other than ulterior motives. It's CHEAPER for a company to do this without the cloud. They're after your data.

I looked into a "smart litterbox scale" which seemed clever as it could weigh your cat every time they use the box and even determine when certain activities happened.... But it relied 100% on the manufacturer's servers to operate. So I passed on it.

I wish it didn't recompress *everything*, even stuff that's already smol
comment in response to post
Imagine if they'd done this instead of the garbage one they did a few years ago. Sigh. Didn't Dan Haskett do some of the concept art?
comment in response to post
Yeah, keeping cats indoors benefits both your cats and the local wildlife. It's like a win-win all around. And it doesn't deprive them of enrichment if you set up your home properly for cats, with toys and activities and plenty of windows to look out of.

What the hell is wrong with you? What makes you think this is an appropriate thing to say to someone? How'd you like it if someone said they wanted to kill your birds?

I don't see this place as a "left-leaning echo chamber". I see it as a "mostly asshole-free space."

I think a lot of people (including myself to some extent) got used to things slowly getting better over time, and just kinda assumed we would never backslide. That's basically how it was until 2016; it felt like our society was slowly becoming more enlightened. I had no fear we'd ever backslide.

I'm not so certain pitching a baby would be considered a legal pitch under MLB rules.

I vaguely remember a two drink minimum too. With modern drink prices + tip that's the cost of an observation deck ticket. And plenty will spend more. Also liked that it was welcoming and wasn't super pretentious. Rooftop bars here in Miami are terrible that way, with dress codes and snooty staff.

From the look of it they're even going to tear out most of the floor plate on level 95? Freaking hell, all that massive expense to make it a worse experience than before.

When I was going to Chicago nearly every year, it got to the point where I, a visitor myself, was starting to introduce other people to the Signature Lounge. I loved that place. I tried to make it every year and it was always great. I don't understand how it wasn't successful. It was always packed.

I feel the same way. I wish I could have a Bluesky mostly free of current events. I don't bury my head in the sand either; I catch up on things from time to time. It's that slow... trickle... constantly...all..day...long... that destroys me.

From what you've described I'm not surprised. If people can't even go for a walk without being harassed it's no longer a livable location. (seriously WTF is wrong with the locals there?)
