I enjoyed it quite a lot. And this review isn't even that bad, especially coming from this website (IIRC, they kinda panned Wu Ming, which is a mortal sin). But saying dialogue is a direct quote when it's quoting a translation is problematic, imo. And TBH, the occasional odd, overly archaic (1/2)

translation choices threw me out more than once, especially compared to the actual Chinese subtitles. And that's a Western problem that shouldn't be framed the way this reviewer has framed it. (In other news, XZ is hot and Mongolian is fascinating how the hell do they make those sounds??)

complaining about “bad” dialogue via subtitles is a fucking annoying thing i see westerners constantly doing in c-fandom. like how block-headed and stupid can you be. it’s perfectly fine in the original language; certain concepts may be cheesy in eng but are still beautiful and dignified in chinese

best to watch it first and form an opinion from there before trusting english reviews from writers who are clearly just trying to sound smart about the genre but don’t know much ;)

there are plenty of very positive chinese reviews from genpop

More than half the complaints in this review are actually about the subtitling, which definitely had some problems occasionally in its choice of register. Also...god, so ignorant and dismissive of the books afkghshdjd

interesting choice of words. i’ve not read that review but i just watched the movie - it’s many things, but cornball certainly isn’t one of them
