If your dog is react barking at something, yelling your dog's name followed by "stop it" etc. won't work, but it will get them more excited.
Stop what you're doing, walk to where your dog is, pretend to have a look around, and then praise them.

Consistently is key. They want rules that are black and white e.g. if they are allowed on the couch sometimes, but get yelled at another time, A: that's not a rule, B: you're unreliable
