Interesting stuff. Maybe because I played it first, I've always had a soft spot for RRV but I can see how one person's slick can be another's soulless. It's also amazing how pervasive Gran Turismo's influence is, both in upending the racing genre and changing how we think about cars and games.

Thanks for reading! Definitely, I also wonder if GT’s progression fusion also influenced genres beyond racing.

I do remember being hyped for RRV at the PS2’s launch but maybe settled on both slick and soulless. Even then, I think the overall game has more soul than its setting specifically.

It certainly inspired almost every publisher to take a shot at a sim-style racing game with... mixed results, though I think design-wise it reflects the trends of the time. The first two GTs are 90s collectathons while 4-6 have a post-open world maximalist design (peaking with driving on the moon).

Outside games, though, GT's influence is remarkable. There's a generation of cars immortalised partly by being in the games, it was on Top Gear in the mid 00s, and there's the GT Academy/esports and collaborations with IRL manufacturers.
