@vjsanchez.bsky.social we just recently withdrew an application note after 6mo in the "with editor" limbo... Been sent out twice for review and only got one rev. Moved to an executive editor, no advancement either. That journal doesn't deserve its status, since quite a time now!

After two months without an editorial decision and several emails to their office with no clear answers, I decided to withdraw the paper and resubmit it to NAR Genomics and Bioinformatics, where it was promptly accepted. A few weeks later, a similar package was published in Bioinformatics 🧬🖥️

Was it ethical to delay a manuscript for two months just to decide if it should be sent for review? Was the delay intentional? While I’m relieved that both papers were accepted, we were fortunate to have a rapid decision from NAR Genomics and Bioinformatics 🧬🖥️

To be clear, it’s not the journal, it’s the scum reviewer. Look at the senior author on the Bioinformatics paper from the other group. Voila!

I could tell you stories that would make your hair curl (I see we have the same barber). I’m think of that quote “When people show you who they really are, believe them . . . “.
I think (hope) it’s still pretty rare, but it seems to me the more competitive the field the more likely it is to happen.

That happens in other journals as well. AFAIK NPG can decide not to publish a paper after positive reviews if something similar is published at the same time.

The problem is that the paper was blocked in the editor. We didn’t know if we were going to pass to reviews or not during two months.

Same event with top science journal. We were invited to submit a study after publishing initial work in a sister journal. Delays for 3 months. Called editor. Said he was waiting on Lasker winner and I was backup. Rushed stripped down results to a rapid communication in a specialist journal

I feel you. I would have accepted a mail from editor saying that they couldn’t go on with review due to a concurrent paper previously submitted.

The editorial management was excellent and the reviewers very constructive. I don’t know if I will submit again a manuscript to Bioinformatics.

I don’t know if it’s what happened with your manuscript, but editing a plos comp biol has been an eye opener for how hard it has been to get reviewers. My first paper got an angry email from authors after 10s of reviewers said no over several weeks

I am not questioning how difficult it is to find reviewers. My point is about the editor’s role in moderating unprofessional behavior from some referees.

I understand it must be hard to be an editor. However, if you have comments from six reviewers and one asks for new experiments in the second round of revision, it’s important to address such unprofessional behavior and make a decision promptly.

That does sound dreadful- I don’t know why they’d do that, and I’m not commenting on your manuscript. It’s just that the review situation was a surprise for me, as was the tone of the author response

Given the experience. And how things are managed for certain journals, publishing a pre-print a head of journal submission will become a must.
