Worse, health & social care are often WHY people with MH problems can't work - from medication to social isolation with to appointments in working hours & not offering robust community care soon enough when they relapse. As a society we have allowed this to happen in our community.

Social protections against the market are vital for those for whom the market will provide none of the essentials of life. The question of what happens to people when those protections is removed is not 'well, they lose their special status and just become like everyone else'.

There is no guarantee that a) work is available and b) that work will be restorative, enriching or even that it'll cover the day to day cost of life. Work isn't a piece of piss. Returning to work isn't either. And especially not when you are desperate and also unwell.

And if employers are not on side. I have been very lucky both in terms of employer but managers as well one of whom had experience of mental illness in his own family but that is not a universal experience unfortunately

Being poor makes it awful to walk into a room of people who aren't, especially when those people are judging you as a possible employee. Changing routine, learning new things, changes in income: all of these things are incredibly hard when you are already impaired, tired, anxious and under duress

I'll tell you what does drive people to despair: money worries. The idea that you can improve someone's mental health by giving them more money worries should be an obvious mistake of thinking. But it isn't. Because years of right wing rhetoric has made it impossible to see people's needs clearly

I agree with you. I am for UBI - Universal Basic Income for people in the US who need it. I doubt that Trump would understand it, much less support it. And our Republican Congress does exactly what Trump tells them to do; they have no independence.

The available support does not define what someone's difficulties are, so changing the available support doesn't change the nature of someone's difficulties. So few peope working on benefits policy have the experience of applying for a job when they are unwell and desperate.

The minimising of the impacts on people's lives of conditions that present significant challenges when competing in the open jobs market is an ongoing scandal. How would a glib policy maker function at work of words would not come out of their mouth or where every second was terror and mental chaos?
