If you believe AI produces no value, which is absolutely true of generative and algorithmic AI tech companies are hard pushing than any water or energy use is wasted.

The things AI could do good on is not what tech companies are selling.

AI medical imaging for instance is undersold but would provide potentially massive, life saving implications. AI translation for impromptu or otherwise inhibited communities could help a lot. However what OpenAI, Google, Apple, Facebook etc are pushing aren't worth a single volt.

I've seen some argue that "paycheck to paycheck" is a nebulous term, but in fact some studies have defined it pretty clearly, specifically distinguishing this numeric metric from from subjectively feeling broke.

I imagine part of it is that water is physical and at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy so it emotionally connects in a way that statistical bias and lack of accountability don't.
