Some grad students are advised to be adversarial and pick fights. But if you find yourself attacking someone's work, that's the wrong approach. Don't aim to take down papers or researchers; focus on working together to correct errors and—if that fails—write a better paper.

My doctoral supervisor advised me against trying to ‘land blows’ on others and their work…to strive to do good work that would be viewed alongside that others and add to the collective…my work improved and I enjoyed my work more

I would need some additional convincing that this is some enlightened way of thinking about it. I'm resistant to the idea that you're seemingly saying: Only the aggressor gets to be adversarial. Isn't the idea that they're choosing to enter the arena? So what if I choose to be their opponent?
