Disney+ likely made a non-renewal decision because they felt it wasn't performing well... at the time. But if it gained an audience after cancellation... well, numbers talk. Don't be too surprised if there is already a plan...
Pair this with the news that Disney’s 4th quarter last year was “bolstered by strong results from streaming” The Acolyte being #2 means it was partially responsible for that success.
Eh. They were interesting in the original trilogy when they were mysterious warrior monks.
They became decidedly boring AF in the prequels when they are emotionless robot carbon copies with no personality who are apparently unwanted children just born with the right midichloriant count.
I just couldn't get into it, I loved Andor and Ashoka, but just couldn't find my footing in The Acolyte. BTW, I didn't flood social media and the reviews either, I just moved on.
It only "underperformed" because they let the budget explode to $200m
Of course they're not going to make enough back from that. It's why Andor got 2 seasons w/$250m. They know it won't make that money back but they committed anyway
If the budget was $100m We'd get 3 more seasons easily
Arguably they set the budget high because (a) Mando was scheduled to wrap up, and they wanted a new show to seamlessly take it's place as the next flagship series, and (b) it was green lit at the height of the pandemic, when Chapek was throwing money at anything that'd get eyes on Disney Plus. 🤷
It was only planned for 1 season, but it feels so incomplete - there's half a dozen plot threads left dangling, and some of the ones wrapped up in the show weren't explained.
Andor got 2 seasons because Gilroy baked it into his contract.
Yeah 5 seasons would've left Gilroy ancient by the end, and Diego Luna is pushing it trying to play someone 25 years his junior right now, let alone in 10 years, lol. 2 seasons is enough.
"Underpreforming" maybe Disney ought to pull it's head out of its ass and reevaluate what it considers to be highpreforming for a fucking streaming platform. This is TV not movies.
We really, really need to give streaming shows time to mature, so disappointing. There's a lot of promise in these characters and the plot. I guess we'll cross our fingers for an animated or print continuation?
Im baffled. I cant believe people actually were interested in watching another SW show. Must be hatewatchin', or people REALLY HAD great expectancies.... Guess i dodged a bullet
In an odd way, it makes sense. All the outcry & backlash & yet people wanted to know for themselves. I’m not as strong as others. I’m not interested in spending the time to watch :/
I thought the characters were well done and the story line had interesting twists. I also feel like it ended in a way that was satisfying enough to not need to know what happens next, but also hoping the story is fleshed out in books instead.
I play this show once a week when I work from home. I still love Andor more but I want a second season of The Acolyte. Perhaps the producers can pitch a somewhat cheaper production.
Okay so what is it? Because per Disney “We were happy with our performance…” and now we know it was the second highest viewed show after a live action best selling book. In what world is that “underperforming”
The problem is that the writing was both too mature for younger viewers & intellectually insulting to older viewers. All the whining about casting/race introduced so much meaningless noise that actual critique or conversation is outright dismissed. All the money in the world cannot save bad writing
Was it perfect? No. It was a typical first season where it laid the foundation. In times before social media this would’ve likely gotten a second season. There have been plenty of series that were underwhelming and then grew into favorites.
TBF TNG would have been cancelled then too if it had aired on a dedicated network like every other show but to massively oversimplify...because TNG did first run syndication direct to local affiliates and TOS was already massively popular on those affiliates as reruns this allowed it to coast to S2.
I will maintain that Andor is the only show that I’ve been truly impressed by out of all the Disney Star Wars. Everything else I’ve seen feels about as well written as Saturday morning cartoons.
Andor is a great show but not everything has to be brooding, dark and overwritten. SW was created as a homage to the Saturday serial shows that were pulpy outrageous fantasy. Personally I blame GoT for taking the fun from fantasy. Variety is fine but if all SW was like Andor it’d just be depressing
Yea Skeleton Crew had none of the depth of Andor (with the exception of one execution) but was a great romp for a 10 year old or somebody with a 10 year old.
Crazy how I hopped on as a Star Wars fan during the pandemic and in less than 5 years, they completely killed my interest in Star Wars. This franchise has too much garbage in it now. I could excuse the sequel trilogy but now almost every show is mediocre *at best*
Dunno why they canned this, especially if it’s the second best performing show. I heard there was some right wing bitchery I didn’t pay attention to why but it probably revolved around the lead actress and the diversity of the rest of the cast. Was easily as good as skeleton crew
I can only speak for myself but there were only 2 standout episodes out of 8. They wasted top talent like Carrie-Ann Moss who had less screen time than a poorly done CGI gopher character. Lastly, they killed off the majority of likable characters. Next to Andor & Skeleton Crew, it was kinda meh…

I wouldn’t call that underperforming at all.

But apparently it “ruined the backstory” of Glop Shitto, Glagnon Maguffin, and Darth Pukeus, so we can’t have a second season.

WAIT!!! You can do that? :)
To put in perspective, Squid Game streamed 4.9 Billion in its first week.
2.7 billion over a year means the streaming service hasn't had a hit in 2024.

Even if it stayed "in budget" it was probably only planned for 1 season unless it was a massive critical success like Mando S1/Andor
It's ultimately the fault of the producers & financers. Not the creatives

Make it make sense.
Did Agatha All Along "underperform" because it got fewer viewers??
Acolyte has a better first season with better character development than STTNG, and I say this as a big TNG fan.
Give shows a more restrained budget and more episodes to breathe.
Like yeah they killed her off in the first 5 minutes but her best scenes were later in the show.
If you're such a Carrie fan you should've kept watching the show because her scenes in it are some of the best.
But it seems like you only like her if she's the main character.
