Adding to @mattyglesias.bsky.social, there's precedent for this. Recall in 2018 Republicans were certain they could run on Trump's tax cut for the rich by pretending it was pro-worker. After the public argument started, Rs basically stopped talking about it entirely.

While I have no doubt the regime can shift a close enough election to steal it, if they attempt that against a large enough gap in public support, there is likely to be a snap special election. Using lead ballots. So public support does matter, which is why they're fighting the media.
