People who know history: would it be accurate to say in hindsight that Carter lost because of inflation, not because of the malaise speech, the hostages, or wearing sweaters in the White House?

IMO the special forces hostage rescue helicopters crash and main stream media reminding us every five minutes how many days the hostages were being held implied Carter was weak.
I'm being cheeky here, but also somewhat serious insofar as the way we often narrate history may have little or nothing to do with the core factors driving election outcomes
I doubt it’s only one factor. Inflation for sure. Also long gas lines, unemployment. Ted Kennedy primarying him. And Ted Koppel. 142 days into the hostage crisis, ABC News created a nightly news show with the subtitle title “America Held Hostage.”
Wait you mean post hoc storytelling based on popular anecdotes and convenience sampling might be less reliable than systematic theorizing and observation
