The best discovery was for me: first time through you sort of root for Tony thinking the goal of the series is to tell the story of his gang’s triumph or at least survival, which gets subverted unexpectedly. 2nd time through you realize it’s King Lear from beginning to end. A total unraveling

I'd say by ep3 you're into the swing. It's heavily character based and I think that's why it's hard to get into as you simply don't know why to care about everything you see in ep1 and ep2 to an extent

It's definitely worth it. A little spoiler that'll help if you find S1 theme difficult: each series deals with a different aspect of Baltimore. S1 is the gangs, S2 is the ports, S3 is probably about the American dream, S4 is about children, and S5 is about the press. But everything is layered.
