I'd say (but this is my best guess) it's more complicated than that. There are voters/media who think "only important Unis are Oxbridge/Russell Group/Pre-92s" (take your pick) but if any Uni closes then there's a direct impact on the constituency (locally and the catchment area) and hence MPs.

They'll feel it though. The scale of current cuts will make a difference to the economy of many places, especially those already struggling. And the courses cancelled, the students who have to move away to finish

If it happened to my place, most of the students wouldn’t finish their degrees - between family responsibilities and work, they can’t move. We’ve already cut so many degrees that they don’t exist for non-mobile students across a huge area.

Absolutely, so some of the most marginalised students are expected to cough up fees, and fund their time studying for degrees they may never be able to complete, through no lack of capacity or commitment.
