its partly just nostalgia fest but, basically since the 3rd edition to 7th edition are based on a set of similar rules there are attempts to create a fan rulebook which lets you use any of the codexs from this era

John Blanche deservedly gets a lot of credit for setting 40k's mood, but Wayne England delivered a gallery of utterly invincible heaters for this book. Rips so hard.

GW does a piss poor job of crediting its artists. I'm confident that the marine and scribe are by Wayne England, but I'm less certain of the other two. I think the astropath is by Des Hanley and the guard officer is by John Wigley, but don't quote me on that.
