I feel sometimes this struggle is a side effect of placing so much of our self-worth on being productive or having a purpose. I’ve found if I set aside time to noodle around with synthesizers and remove any expectation of producing something, my enjoyment of the experience increases significantly.

I had a teacher at Berklee who regularly reminded us of the importance of doing “sketches” and it’s easy to forget that there needs to be serious amounts of play and experimentation before actually working on something that will become a presentable, finished piece of work.

That's pure joy in the act of creating a sound. It doesn't need to make anyone else happy or impressed. It's okay to sing even if you're bad. It's okay to noodle on your old clarinet just because it's fun, not because you'll ever be "good enough."

I personally don’t enjoy writing sometimes but that tends to be when it’s not coming out right.

When I’m hitting it, it’s the greatest feeling ever that doesn’t need outside factors to achieve.

To be fair it is a chore for some, not everyone it musical or artistic. I personally would rather spend hours doing calculus than draw a picture or write a song. That said, monetizing anything can take the joy out of it and make it a chore.

I will add that, yes, a creative job can turn an enjoyable creative pursuit into a chore. Any activity can be bogged down by processes, deadlines, and criticisms. But, the blanket statement of “it’s not really enjoyable to make music” is just plain silly.
