In Sask some people think socialism is crazy yet belong to Co-op and cash their yearly dividend and somebody needs to tell them that cooperative economics is literally a fucking form of stateless socialism.

Similar situation in the states. Many rural folks rely on and love their electric, banking, and food co-ops, but will instantly sour upon hearing the word socialism. They're unknowingly part of a movement that was founded by a socialist, Robert Owen, in the 1800s.

I grew up in the coop system (my father was and is a manager for his entire career, and I worked at a coop myself for over a decade), and it’s not in any way socialist. Coops as they exist in Saskatchewan are *retail* coops. They aren’t owned by employees. It’s just localised capitalism.

As far as employees are concerned, one of these retail coops is literally no different at all from an ordinary business owned by shareholders—with one important difference: your customers know they own the business, and often feel entitled to let you know.

There are three types of coops recognised by law, and this is only one of them, and definitely the least socialist of all. It is better in some ways than having a business owned by shareholders who live elsewhere, but only marginally, and not for the employees.

You would think so, but no. The prices are the same as elsewhere. The members of the coop just receive dividends on the basis of how much the coop profits and how much they contributed to those profits. It feels kind of like a rewards program, basically.

I remember waiting outside a local labour congress meeting for my sister. And one fellow from MGEU said that they could donate the cereal to the school breakfast program, but could not help serving it. In case they " infected the kids with socialism" ( he said it as a joke)

Very few that adamantly oppose socialism even know what that term even means. I didn't for the longest time.
The only definition they know is what the Americans have told them. And the American right has corrupted the definition beyond all recognition.
