No animal belongs in a zoo - but sometimes, it's a necessity for their wellbeing and conservarion efforts.
Tasmanian Devils, for instance, suffer from a viral infection in over 90% of their wild population that causes painful facial lesions, and is usually fatal - zoo populations /1
zoos exist mainly for profit and entertainment, and the mojority are exploitative.
there is nothing entertaining about a wild animal in a cage, and NO ZOO is necessary for the continuation of a species
I'm saying the pandas would likely be extinct now without the efforts of zoos, both in china and around the world, and they are no longer classified as endangered (they've moved up to "vulnerable").
I'm getting tired of this argument, sorry, I might just bow out.
Past the worst of the disease outbreak. Some wild populations were never affected but generally the wild populations have now stabilised. The captive populations were an important βinsuranceβ measure but I fear itβll become an excuse to hold Devils under faux-conservation efforts by some zoos.
i will respectfully disagree with every ounce of my being that "zoos are doing the best they can".
the literal majority are doing *whatever* they can to keep their profits high enough, that imprisoning the animals to continue to reap more profit is considered "the best"
Thereβs some great zoos- especially those that have the βun-zooβ philosophy where the animals are more free range & itβs the humans who are restricted
In a past role I regulated zoos & shut down one & almost a 2nd due to animal welfare & had good support from the sector wanting to improve standards
When I was a little girl the elephants were my favorite at the circus. When I grew up and found out they were being abused I cried hot tears. I love these majestic animals so much π
There's a concert venue in this very zoo directly next to the elephants. The first & only time attending a concert there was very upsetting to witness their distress-swaying. Worse to hear people assert the ellies were dancing to the music. It's a sign of distress.
Elephants donβt drink through their trunks. They scoop water into it and spray it into their mouths. Babies donβt know how to do that at first so they get down into water to drink directly with their mouths. So cute!
That's unmistakable happiness. That probably wasn't early home life for Trump, or the home life he offered his children. The republicans could start off with Hyraxes then work their way back to elephants as their symbol. Probably they'd need to start off with supervised visits with hyraxes.

what exactly would you like me to tell them?

(Citation needed, my memories of this are about a decade old, but are still valid.)
I do understand why people dislike zoos, I don't want to dismiss their feelings, and there *are* bad zoos out there.
But for the most part, zoos are doing the best they can.

He so loved to play with water as well.
Rest in Peace Otto
REAL MOMMY & BABY ELEPHANTS! π
At least they wouldnβt be VOTING for HORRIBLE BILLS like the BBB to CUT MEDICARE & MEDICAID & all Americans safety nets!
Such a shame for that little one --- FORCED TO LIVE IN CAPTIVITY IN A HORRIBLE ZOO!! What disgrace to keep exploiting animals for $$$. ππ©
