Yes, I am in the middle of reading The Hunt For Red October and was about to say the same thing. The sub’s short-lived *zampolit* was named Ivan Yurievich Putin (!). 😲

A rather gripping novel. Better than the movie they made from it. If you like Clancy he wrote a cold war novel not involving anyone named Jack Ryan called "Red Storm Rising". Absolutely worth a read.

Oh I think both are really good for what they are. The movie has better flow and grip. The novel has a *lot* more breadth and detail, like the Russian term above and many others. But the language and the plot are very “choppy”. The mid-book depiction of a fatal sub nuclear disaster though, wow!

I think the film oversimplified much of the plot, and over complicated the unique propulsion of the Soviet sub. Clancy's concept of a ducted water turbine sounds feasible, the movie version felt more like science fiction.
