I think Sue C is reflecting on the trend of the last decade conflating real news for entertainment. Evidenced by the rise of opinion-based news networks (like Fox and Sky) which doesn’t care about trust & facts so has tainted all news channels.

Listened to a really good interview with Jennifer Robinson about the problems with defamation law a couple of months ago on Late Night Live. Abusers like Jimmy Saville only revealed posthumously when everyone knew.

No sympathy. We, as consumers of media, have been aware of it crashing & burning for years - much more so than those on the inside. If they'd only taken some constructive criticism instead of doubling down and calling us trolls & sewer rats, they might have learnt something about what people want. 🤷‍♀️

Defamation laws vary between the states. In some, truth alone is sufficient, while in others it must also be of public benefit. Then there’s the cost of defending the matter in court which can be a major disincentive

because the path to that finding is ruinously expensive - even if the case being found in your favour because what you've said/written is true means you get at the very least costs awarded, you still have to stump the money up in the first place. More money than 98% of the country could dream of

I agree with both and the article but the weight of money which currently controls ALL of our judicial system is a massive problem in my humble opinion(or IMHO).

I welcome the desire of many outlets to broaden their appeal instead of just being mouthpieces for one side or the other. Anything that could lessen our divides seems like a good thing to me.
