Before becoming a prof in studio art, I was living off of my art practice. Barely and with gigs like illustration and writing, too - but that’s how I’d manage, I think. And I’d return to cocktail bartending in a pinch. This question is interesting and I wonder about others’ answers now, too.

If someone hasn’t been tenure-track or tenured long term, or didn’t go straight through academia to a faculty position, they must have other skills and an employment history they could fall back on if their research area can’t provide an income outside the university? Right??

Here are some corporatey words: Systems and Process Improvement, Data Analysis, Document Control, Stakeholder Management. All profs do these things, and they are all descriptions I heard repeatedly ( incl in job titles) in my corporate life.

I have been contemplating this for several years. Technical writing maybe? Depending upon discipline, researcher/analyst at a think tank? Post at local government cultural organizations (like city or county arts or humanities councils).

When I pivoted not only was it a good place to see job listings it was also helpful to just see the types of jobs being posted.

It does skew towards NY but has remote stuff and it was good to think about what kinds of local orgs are like the ones posting.

One thing artists have are skills. Do an inventory of all the skills. Then match them to fancy corporate resume terms. Try it it is a confidence booster.

Half-joke. Computers/IT. it’s tough to pivot as you get older. But many of the skills I learned through my BA in English helped in learning computers/IT. Especially researching/troubleshooting.
