He was the nice and kind goth uncle, whose stories the kids loved listening to. The one who really understood us. And no matter how sweet his voice is, the same stores from the rapist uncle just don't sound the same.

All true. Lovecraft didn't have a persona at all, partly because of the time he existed in. And that was perhaps lucky for him. But unlike Gaiman, he never pretended to be good, he never championed any virtuous cause. He knew he was a wreck and a loser, and his writings reflect it.
