Two takeaways here:
1) Steam has become a bright spot for many game-makers as console sales have flattened.
2) Console exclusives will become obsolete soon, especially for third-party publishers.

If graphics cards weren't comically overpriced, and if PCs were better at playing on a TV, I suspect it'd be far worse.
1) Nintendo shows a place for it (Had BOTW come a year after release to PC I doubt Switch would sell 140 mil units)
2) Most of PS's revenue still comes from 3rd party sales, and now the genie out what is the demand for PS6?
3) Quality usually dips with multi platform release targets
5) If consoles become less lucrative the barrier to add new gamers gets higher
7) Steam isn't driving the advancement of game production and Valve doesn't seem to worry/care
Indies don't compete with AAA games on Switch for attention and noone buys a PS5/Series to play games that run on existing hardware.
Gamepass has eaten most game sales for Xbox
And PS usually splits AAA sales with PC and sometimes comes out ahead
But they're not in a dire position as the other members of the big 3.
The advantage that Nintendo has over them is that they don't have to make costly AAA games that use the latest technology to stay relevant.
-Nintendo 1st party games are way cheaper than Xbox and PlayStation ones.
-Nintendo doesn't subsidize hardware.
This is why they don't need to put exclusives anywhere else, by now.
They will be pushed to on the long term, if you ask me.
PlayStation is trying to follow Xbox steps, bit by bit, to not depend on hardware only.
That's why Nintendo put a big 2 on the S2 logo.
If their hardware fail, that's it for them by now
Nintendo also tends to keep their games at retail pricing throughout the life of the product. They go on sale sometimes but generally, will keep their value.
Obviously it would have been much bigger if it had been day and date and if the PC port was any good though.
Not directed at you btw Jason
People shouldnt need to wait for modders to fix a game to be playable after paying $80 😅
Your opinion is that console exclusivity will remain, and that's fine too.
At the same time I’m worried for the environments that first party games created that lead to some of the best quality titles in the name of getting people on platforms and what happens as that slowly dissolves
its become more about life-service "trawling" and less about discreet, shiny lures
basically I miss the ps1/ps2 and I realize were not going back
First party wants to make the best games so people join their eco system.
Third party have trended more lack luster to appease shareholders
First party games don’t need to be profitable as their top priority (like 3rd party) when getting users into the ecosystem can make up for that.
As the former weakens I fear that so will the latter.
Sony and Microsoft are making their boxes less necessary, and are hurting because of it.
If that's a contributing factor it's a tiny one. Over the past ten years games and game franchises have become platforms. That commoditizes the console over time. Roblox/Fortnite are on iPad. Every kid requires a PC laptop for school.
When you give people no reason to buy your box, they tend not to buy your box.
This current gen is the first in which the top Xbox & PlayStation games are basically the same as last gen thanks to cross gen/play digital platforms.
Average consumer simply wants to play popular games—regardless of exclusivity.
They have had made more money on PS5 gen that it eclipsed entire PS4 gen revenue wise.
No reason to upgrade consoles to keep playing the same games
(Except Nintendo, but there's always an exception to the rule lol)
(Even back when Western critics were saying it's dead)
In your own words, "You don't spend $70 billion dollars to keep things multiplatform."
You guys wanted Microsoft to make games exclusive until the end of 2023. You guys even brought up Sony making deals with 3rd party publishers.
The anti-exclusive narrative only started when it was clear MS was bringing their games to PS and Switch.
going through works out for the best, and you get to stop being this kind of person
What's weird is being pro-exclusive and then calling it bad 3 months later because a major corporation told you so.
*It becomes clear more games are headed to PlayStation*
Mid 2024 - "Exclusives are better for gamers."
Yeah, I'm not buying it. lol
Why be angry and obsessed with Destin when he doesn’t run Xbox? Makes zero sense to be this obsessed.
And then I can just go handheld whenever. No PS Portal or xCloud needed. (Though it also does that.)
If something is available everywhere and it plays on deck I will buy it there. If it's not on deck I still lean steam 90% of the time.
My PS5 is just for cross play with friends when you can't do PC+console
Even the devs admitted they can’t keep these games exclusive.
