I watched Lifeforce recently because I kept hearing good things. My theory is that people mostly remember the beginning. I think it's legitimately great until shortly after the return to earth but found the bulk of the rest surprisingly boring given the subject matter.

I can see that. I mostly like it on a technical level...I think it looks just GREAT, and it's quite a different kind of movie for the time period of the 80s, harkening back to the British sci-fi/horror of the 60s (drawing specifically n the QUATERMASS movies and Hammer Horror).

It does lose a lot of momentum as you move into the middle of the 2nd act and into the 3rd with the running around trying to find her and figure out the mechanics of the life draining/zombification, and it weirdly changes protagonists from Steve Railsback to the British SAS guy.

But I still really enjoy it over all...particularly the first act and some of the stuff in the second (the 'Born by Blood' sequence is still STUNNING!), as the film is very tonally serious about some very WILD ideas, and again...looks and SOUNDS (what a fucking SCORE!) just great to me.

So apparently, SHOUT! Factory re-released a bunch of their earlier releases as Steelbooks with new 4K remastered scans as well as; in the case of LIFEFORCE; new extras as well.

LIFEFORCE seems to have gotten the biggest upgrade, going from 1 disc with 2 cuts of the film to 2 discs...

...which means that both films look better as there is more room for them on the discs.

This was pretty cheap considering out rare and out-of-print it is, and I love this film, so I didn't mind getting it for a third time (I'm not getting the 4K one...no fucking way. -__- ).

I was on the fence about this one...not because of the film; which I've never seen, but I do recall seeing the VHS cover all the time as a kid; but because SHOUT! Factory re-released it on 4K with a few new extras.

But I don't want to pay that much for it, so I decided to just go with this option.

Wes Craven did not have much success with his post NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films in terms of box office, but at the very least I find his work to be interesting, and have some unique ideas and a wry humor about them.

If this is good and I get the opportunity, maybe I'll upgrade some day!

Lastly is STIGMATA (1999), which I recall seeing when it came out (rental, not in theater).

Gabriel Byrne is always a great performance, and I've been enjoying the grisly post SILENCE OF THE LAMBS type thrillers of this era.

I don't recall much about this...including if I liked it or not!
