You already know the answer to that question. Most people who work in STEM only value educational disciplines that can be used to make money, and they see the arts and humanities as a waste of time and resources that SHOULD be cut.

For some people, the only purpose of education is to make money.

I asked a table full of science profs last night why the arts and humanities weren't included in the protest, and some of them laughed at me like it was a joke. So you know, your humanities colleagues aren't holding our breaths.

part of the problem is that while people in the humanities, arts, and social sciences certainly organize protests and marches, they usually don’t take it upon themselves to march for their own disciplines, for whatever reason. the scientists have always advocated for their disciplines

it could be because ppl in these disciplines are more aware of all the problems in the world and don’t see the preservation of their disciplines as a crisis compared to all the other things there are to protest against

The marches for science were organized by small groups of STEM grad students, largely. There could be a march for the humanities. I would absolutely go.

I was impressed that medical students organized a protest at our Uni’s President’s tepid response to MD-rapist Robert Hadden. But the way some STEM folks like to be unbothered by real world problems. 😮‍💨

Honestly it's the same reason why sociologists five and ten years ago were not mobilizing against cuts to the humanities. I have been astonished, watching from outside but adjacently. The reasons are many- lack of praxis around solidarity, disciplinary loyalty demands, and 'better them than us.'

Geographers don't seem any more bestirred to take this on; I'm not coming for sociologists specifically *except that* if anyone in soc sci might have used systemic awareness of what was happening to build awareness and urgency for cross-institutional purposes, it is they. But nope.
