I just called Jeffries’s office (202-225-5936 fwiw), amazingly got to speak to a human, and told them that a person who cannot support a colleague’s fundamental human rights should not be any kind of leader at all, let alone Minority Leader. Maybe it’ll get through.

My gut feeling is that the party establishment sees Trump term 2 as the perfect opportunity to shift as far right as they can while still getting to play "the party of the high road" by simply not being the fascists. But it's also possible they're just spineless cowards.
