Suggestion: Property tax should pay for our utilities. If you pay that tax, you should get water and power (gas if you need it) for free. Not a perfect suggestion but it's a nice thought.
Property taxes are how money is worth money - fiat currency has no value in it of itself, and therefore must be valued in some way - the government made the only form of tax it will accept for Property tax as our fiat thus ensuring the base value of the dollar.
We've been saying it for over a decade: In the current state of the world, home-ownership is treated as a "privilege", and not a RIGHT. https://www.soenetwork.net/housing
This strikes me as a really dumb take. Permanent ownership of private land trumps collective agency to make it possible for that land to enjoy road and utility access, schools, public safety, etc?
Taxes on what you buy, taxes on what you own, taxes on what you earn, taxes on when you die, taxes on inheritance... We're literally being taxed to death, and I don't know about you, but I feel like I have ZERO representation in government right now, local or otherwise. When does it end?
I’m not disputing your overall point, but taxes on your property assessed by the community in which it stays and needs communal services make way more sense than taxes on income or consumption. Also you have to be *really* fucking rich for your heirs to pay any inheritance tax.
15 years ago I did a survey for HUD. I spoke to a woman who had to quit her job to care for her husband who had built their home single handely 30 years before. They were about to lose it all. It sat on paid for acreage and they couldn’t afford the taxes.
Property taxes are a form of double taxation. We already paid taxes on the money we earned to buy the property. Then, the property taxes go up automatically 2% a year. It’s obscene. Tax the billionaires instead!
