So sad. In Orewa the council closed the library to upgrade it and moved books into the old community hall so the library could still exist albeit in a reduced state. Our Auckland libraries are one of the best things about Auckland.

Councils around the country are being exhorted by the media and ratepayers) to "reduce our rates." Councils will respond by cutting the services that NZers don't realise the councils provide eg libraries, arts etc. The current mayor of Chch described libraries as "just buildings with books in".
