Irish Kiwi living in Ōtautahi. Nerdy lefty introvert; owns many fountain pens, hammocks, and boxes of craft supplies. Sometimes uses them. Ordained minister of the Universal Life Church purely for the gender-neutral title of Reverend.

Just cracked my funnybone so hard against the edge of a window latch that I saw stars. NOT FUNNY. Should've just left the window dirty rather than opening it to polish the outside glass after giving the exterior a clean with a pressure washer earlier today. That'll learn me.

Never let them tell you that Irishness is some set, immutable fact of the blood

Time to biff any gross manky sponges you might have in the kitchen. Use a brush instead! www.bbc.com/future/artic...

I know long-range weather forecasts aren't to be trusted, but I'm cautiously optimistic that my South Canterbury/Catlins Do-Over camping trip next week might go better than the first attempt did at Christmas (rained every day including thunder and lightning, didn't actually make it to the Catlins).

As we all know fossil + zombie = mummy, and Winston has been tanned to a leathery toughness by years of smokes and alcohol, much as the ancient Egyptians sought to preserve their corporeal forms in the afterlife. Unfortunately it means he will outlast us all.

"The diversity of sexual phenotypes across species is vast and spectacular" & so is this delightful story. Thanks to @professormaney.bsky.social for showing how white-throated sparrows are more proof that we shouldn't "flatten nature’s wondrous diversity into two categories, male and female." 🧪

Just submitted my opinions about the Arms Act rewrite. My main point was that the Act should not be "promoting" firearm use at all, safe or otherwise; it should be restricting it to usage that is absolutely required for a specific purpose. consultations.justice.govt.nz/policy/publi...

Un collègue m'envoie ceci, je me sens obligé de partager ce moment.

Please join me in celebrating the perfection of this avocado. I paid an extortionate $2.80 for it at Countdown yesterday so the unblemished creamy flesh and small stone were a big relief!

Big crowd at the SF Tesla dealership protesting our unelected overlord. A tiny sign hangs from an upstairs window

I got one of those dumbass iChoose prepaid Visa cards as part of a cashback offer and wow they're next to useless. Almost nowhere accepts them for online payment and there is no way to convert to actual cash either. I ended up renewing a professional certification and prepaying my electricity bill 🙄

Interesting article about the current mess of copyright and AI and the use of archival artworks. www.itsnicethat.com/articles/eli...

Discovered today that inflation has finally hit Toff's (legendary $2 clothing warehouse in Ōtautahi). As well as the small fenced-off "fancy/$$" section they've always had, there are now several racks on the main floor that are $5 instead of $2.

Please note there is an active petition on Parliament’s website to remove Destiny Church’s charitable status. It was started last year and closes Feb 28th – great timing! Go sign. And write to your MP. petitions.parliament.nz/a22e0d59-7da...

I remember using this Driver Reviver free coffee at Nosh, years ago when the government ran the scheme. It caused some confusion b/c the staff working at the time weren't sure how it worked, but they eventually found a logbook which I signed in return for a cuppa. www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3605...

Goin' to a protest Monday. Made me a sign.

Last week I went to Abel Tasman to walk the coastal track (5 days, 4 nights tenting) and accidentally timed everything PERFECTLY regarding weather and tides. What a gorgeous NZ playground this is. My first night was at the Mutton Cove campsite.
