Both glow, apparently, although it's the females who do the attracting. But you're spot on: I just looked it up and that's a female. The males aren't segmented like that.

They fly the males. Never saw a glow worm before, only the firefly males. Have you seen a female before? It's unusual for them to be out of the grass

We often get them in our garden in the early summer, but this feels pretty early. I thought both looked the same, but I was wrong and you were right.

It's VERY early in the year for them. We usually see them in the USA around the same time as you normally would.
Also I was sure the UK had some bitter cold times this past winter; they can't have survived that, could they?

They emerge in April in the UK and start signalling in June and July, apparently. We benefit from the Gulf Stream* here in the southwest, so we're perhaps a little warmer than equivalent places in the USA.

* Gulf of MEXICO, naturally. 😉

My bad: this is a lady glow worm. Only the females have the segmented body.
