It has been an enormous fall from being a national hero. He was beloved by Ireland and his matches were national events. Sinead O'Connor singing "The Foggy Dew" live as his walkout song was an incredible moment for the country. Now, his support in Ireland is mostly limited to the far-right.
I think if Sinead O'Connor knew what McGregor was really like she would have despised him like everyone else?

My understanding is that it started with his arrogance, which was tolerated in small doses. But, his racism and arrests really caused his popularity to plummet.
It should be noted that the entirety of the far-right in Ireland can comfortably fit inside one NBA arena. The last time there was a major incident involving the far-right, it was 500 people who showed up to riot in Dublin.
They certainly haven't done well in elections, but finally had some success in 2024. I worry there is a growing movement in the younger generations (much like the US). Ireland is so small in population that it doesn't take much to change political outcomes.
He was never loved by Ireland. Mma fans and teenagers yes. But the majority hated him for being nothing but a loudmouth knacker who was an embarrassment to the country. There's a reason why he never got any homecomings like Katie and other athletes get here. He's always been a junkie and a disgrace
