the quality and range of services public libraries provide relative to what they cost is nothing short of a miracle imo. But yeah, sure, “run government like a business.” 📚

Ontario Premier Drug Fraud is defunding our libraries. 50%. He's a high school, illiterate drop out. The only time he was in a library was to do his drug deals. It all tracks.
Government by definition needs to do the chores in which there’s no profit. It needs to be an unbusiness. If there’s profit afoot, a business is already doing it.
To be fair, they are run by Librarians. And Librarians are the most incredible people around. Seriously! We should elect a Librarian to run everything. Run the country like a Library! I need that on a T-Shirt
yeah let’s fuck that right up and turn it into the Vons Express where a good 30% of the space is wasted advertising products and services they don’t sell anymore bc the machines would cost a few cents a day to maintain in working order
Ideally it should not be. But it is.

Businesses have the luxury of failure.
Governments do not.
I work for a town that was founded in 1698.
It’s still paying its bills and will until the end of civilization as we know it.
we’ve elected two “CEO presidents.” They both broke the economy.
Only a fool would claim one can run a government like a business. Their goals are completely different.
Every single time we take my son to the library I am astonished at how amazing it is. The employees put so much effort into creating incredible experiences for the kids.
Why would anyone want anything run like an American business?! They are increasingly shittier every single day. Clothes don’t have hems or waistbands. 500$ viscose dresses. Panera food is 25$ slop and insurance companies are trying to kill you faster than cancer.
I never understood the whole ‘government should be run like a business’ thing. It’s extremely dangerous.
What is a CEO if not a king over his domain, with absolute power to destroy any employee, skirt or outright ignore ethics to alter any business practice that cuts in to profit margins, etc.?
The average cost of sending a student to private school is not cheaper than sending a student to public school. But the public schools hire more qualified teachers, vet them more carefully, pay them much more, and give them pensions and health insurance.
The whole point of “American business model” is to slash quality/amounts, hike prices, underpay employees all to funnel profits to billionaire ruling class, while using that which we need in order to survive to exploit us. Yet the oppressed continue to lift up corporations and their greed 🤦🏽♀️
And now we’re going to be run by a fraudster who literally was able to bankrupt a casino. There isn’t even a pretense of his government’s being either “by the people” or “for the people.”
I always feel like "run government like a single mother" would be better. or single father I guess. but holy heck they know how to get the most out of money and also know the importance of investing in people/kids and services like libraries and public transport.
Nevermind the guy we're talking about has filed bankruptcy like 6 times, found liable in class action discrimination lawsuits, defrauded NY of $400m, also businesses don't ask Congress for permission to do anything and the purpose of government is kinda the opposite of a corporation. Mind blowing
Librarians are the most poorly paid professional graduates. But sure, volunteers and low paid library assistants can operate the systems. Just not set it all up, monitor customer response, keep abreast of new resources and decide digital, media, and paper acquisitions. And much more...
Recall that Trump spent his last four years in power trying to de-fund public libraries. So, they must be doing something right. Get a library card. Become a card-carrying member of your local library.
The government is supposed to NOT run like a business, it's literally built to spend. Literally the only reason the government makes money (through taxes, etc.) is so it can spend that money. It's not a money making machine, it's a money spending machine. Doing any different will jeopardize so much.
I mean, if the government was built to make money, for one, it would have literally no debt. If the government's purpose was to make money, our current taxes would pay off the government debt within a decade. But they don't, because the government's job is not to make money.
1. The government is not a business. The goals and mechanisms are entirely different. The value of a service is not completely monetary.
2. Enron, Purdue Pharma, Union Carbide, Theranos, and Trump University are/were businesses. No one should want to emulate them.
This push to make everything akin to a business is absurd! The moment a businesslike tenor becomes the heart of our entire anthropology, we will hit a point of no return.
Govt exists 2 do good things 4 society that greedy bastards running businesses won’t do. They’ve got theirs, fuck everyone else. Query: why isn’t anyone (evangelicals) saying anything about Elon globe trotting & impregnating numerous women. I think he’s in double digits on kids by several women.
Instead, we should run businesses like the government (public services with no regard to profitability, no shareholders, owned and operated by the public with public accountability).
I genuinely mean this. Markets always fail. They cannot work efficiently. Nationalize everything.
I go to a big box book store, find a book, and read for a while in their reading area. If I like it, I go to my fav local bookstore and order it. Kinda the opposite of a lot of folks. Sorry, not sorry.
I care for a 97 yr old woman who's legally blind and deaf. She calls her library nearly every day with a question. They are here eyes and ears. Free to her.
Government accounting standards are different than normal accounting because the aim of business is to calculate profit and the aim of government is services provided. It fundamentally cannot be run like a business.
If your local library doesn't carry a "banned" book try requesting it through their Interlibrary Loan service. They can often obtain a copy (free) from a library in another city or state to be sent for you to borrow. Including children's books!
Well I think people that say that are actually talking about the federal government. 95% of library funding comes from local taxes not state or fed. It’s a good point but maybe use Medicare as your example.
I feel like politicians always ignore how public libraries are good for the economy. I’ve attended classes for small business owners and referenced so many books from the library for marketing etc
Businesses which are profitable such as Nuclear, Gas, Oil production of any kind need no further government assistance.
All profits will be taxed at 37% federal rate payable to US Treasury.
No grants allowed for profit driven companies of any type.
Certainly can run government same as a corporation for profit.
Cut all credit for borrowing.

Photographer Robert Dawson @dawsonr50.bsky.social (new to BlueSky) has created an incredible photographic survey of the importance of libraries as one of the last public commons
“In a culture that is increasingly privatized, libraries are among the last free place we have. Public libraries are worth fighting for, and this work is my way of fighting.”
yes, but hire library workers full-time and pay us a living wage. We do not seek wealth, but it would be nice to escape hustling for work and poverty wages. 📚

LIKE A W]=[ORE HOUSE
PIMP , JUST LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER
Hang on. Businesses are run to extract as much profit as possible. 🤔

how do women actually FIND it? LOL
I genuinely mean this. Markets always fail. They cannot work efficiently. Nationalize everything.
Elon Musk ran Tesla into being the “Deadliest Car in America.”
Trump ran his own business into bankruptcy SIX times. Even casinos! It’s near impossible to bankrupt a casino, but that moron DID.
Trump ran his charities into fraud.
And ran U.S. into DEBT.
You don't have to sit back and relax
You can actually try changing it
I know we've always been taught to rely
Upon those in authority
But you never know until you try
How things just might be
Governments crack and systems fall
'Cause unity is powerful!
I put shit in a box and it has a 99.999999999% chance to get across the country in 3-4 days?
It's epic. We don't appreciate it enough.
