this 100%. short stories are an end in themselves for many of us, not a means to something else the way non-writers tend to assume. nothing wrong if your goal is to make a jump. novels are a fantastic too. but i fucking love shorts for now and maybe forever. shorts shorts shorts. gimme those shorts.

starting to wonder about selfpublishing a collection. I'd hoped to find a UK press but even small places only accept agented submissions & agents want novels. I don't want to write novels. I love short stories, they're not a stepping stone or training ground to or for anything other than themselves.

Also underappreciated (not me) by many readers (me) for degree of difficulty. A novel allows a little time to meander; it may not be the most desirable thing, or then again it may, but you can *do* it.
Short stories require that everything in them be relevant to the story itself. It's hard!
Not to mention fairy tales...
Now I just need to find a way to extend my life for another 20 years in a non-horror-scenario way so I have more time to read!
