Working retail has taught me someone will always complain about price, try to barter etc. just last week someone tried to haggle a discount for buying multiple books in a book store, being politely blunt has become a skill and even then some people are beyond unreasonable.

Freelancing has also taught me that the miserly folks are almost always terrible clients in other ways too

Appropriate pricing helps filter them out as well as valuing your work correctly

I’m a joiner by trade. I’ve never had to advertise because my clients recommend me so often. I design and build bespoke cabinetry, panelling, etc for mansions and manor houses, many of them listed. Despite having low prices due to not having a lot of overheads, some people still want it cheaper

I wish I could say that, but I'm a writer and people just go and find pirated copies of my books. I'm going to limit some stuff to paper, and the digital stuff I'm going to release by chapter, AFTER I get paid an X amount of money. If people want books for free, at least pay with reviews!

The math that shifted this mentality for me when I had my own business - if you're worried you'll lose clients when you double your prices, you can lose half of them before you feel any negative effect on your bottom line. And you'll be working half the hours.
