When I was a kid—and I mean a little kid—I tried to explain to my family that life insurance is an obvious scam. Because the purpose of the insurance industry is to avoid paying out. But everybody dies. It wouldn’t work if it weren’t a scam

Seriously, one of the few ways cops actually catch murderers is when they take out life insurance on the family they’re planning to kill.

Insurance companies are not supposed to pay out claims, and they do anything so that they don’t—sometimes that incudes catching killers.

Car insurance makes sense. There is an obvious gamble that the user may not get into a car accident. Home insurance makes sense. Maybe there’s no fire or flood. These are wagers. But life insurance? Everybody dies. Health insurance? Everybody gets sick.

Insurance started innocently enough... farmers pooling their money together, investing it, and then paying farmers for catastrophic losses... I think part of the problem now is that insurance is so much more about profit for investors, rather than original goal of providing security to insureds

I know life insurance they try to wager that by the time you die you’ll have paid more into it than you could cash out but it often still makes more sense than leaving cash because that can be scooped up by various banks and hospitals and shit while settling the estate

insurance companies also make money by investing the premiums (likely more from investing than the actual premiums)... when insurance companies suffer losses to their investments, they offset by increasing premiums or reducing payouts
