I think Mr. Bezos has made it clear that if a stance needs taking, he will take a stance, no matter its meaning, since capital is applicable on all sides, & always, in the end, welcome.

When people start wanting less, and being pleased with less, then Mr. B will feel some small pressure.

1. Is "liberty" synonymous with anarchy (you do whatever you want, whenever you want) or the preservation of rules that provide the greatest liberty to the greatest number? Because those are really different ideas.

2. Our founders unambiguously were talking about the latter, after all. The "self-evident" truths were written in the course of creating a new government that would be free of the tyranny of a mad king, and provide people with *collective* liberty through a representative government.

3. That concept of liberty necessarily has limitations on individual liberty. Your right to life and the pursuit of happiness requires laws constraining behavior and courts to enforce those laws after all. Representative democracy requires enforcement of voting laws.

6. I think of the great Fred Kahn, who oversaw deregulation of airlines and telecoms in the 80s & said that deregualtion shifts the burden of consumer protection from rate-setting to anti trust enforcement and fails if it gets rid of the former without creating the latter.
