Please. That first game was mostly just a series of confusing mazes and cryptic clues. Link was just a pawn in a much larger, more confusing game of hide-and-seek with Ganon.
Maybe it's because Zelda 2 was designed to feel more like an RPG (with the experience points) than the first one. But you're right---BOTH are Link's Adventures
First one was mostly a top down action-y game, while the second had an actual adventure and exploring with plenty of characters to meet and help along the way
That’s what I remember at least, from the top of my head back in the day 😅
Just please please please say you aren't one of those people who file Zelda and Zelda II side by side on your shelf and not properly with Zelda under L for legend and Zelda II under Z for Zelda
sorry, meant to reply to the other commenter. I agree with the link's name part. I just remember the creator doing interviews about not hating on Zelda in the process
Correct. :) If you look at Zelda 2's map south of Death Mountain you'll notice that this area is in fact Zelda 1's map (just a zoomed out version of it!).
Link would consistently ask for his name and motivation while filming Zelda 1 so they put it on the title of 2 so he knew who he was and what he was supposed to be doing you gotta remember everyone was on cocaine in the 80s including link
In Zelda 1 Link is just a passer-by who ends up on a military campaign. Zelda 2 involves him discovering a magical destiny, achieving personal growth, and ultimately overcoming his personal demons. It's very much about Link in the way Zelda 1 simply wasn't.
With older games, the backstory was often in the manual. Legend of Zelda was a chosen one story. The manual explained that Link was chosen for the task because the mark of the Triforce appeared on the back of his hand, in accordance with prophecy.
i think it's even more ironic that the zelda of the first game didn't have a legend and the one on the game that wasn't called "legend of zelda" had one. i think they got the names reversed.
I dunno how indicative it is, but the entireity of Zelda 1's world map is contained in the bottom left corner of Zelda 2's (the area around the minidungeon where you get the hammer) so Nintendo themselves might've been "look how much bigger scope THIS game has!"
Because they had already named it when they released the original. And the original was supposed to be Link doing his taxes and going to the DMV. It didn’t focus well, so they changed the original to have an adventure, but they’d already committed to using “adventure” in the title of the second one
I have been stopping myself from saying this all day. Thank you for your service to all of us pendants out there trying to take the high road for once. 😂
I would have never made it through this game (or Castlevania 2 for that matter) without a walkthrough. Yeah, it’s sort of cheating, but I still felt a sense of accomplishment when Indian finally beat them. 🤷🏻♂️
Because it's an adventure taken up personally by Link himself after realizing he was the only one who could wake up the sleeping princess Zelda. Meanwhile Zelda 1 has Link venture out and find and defeat Ganon simply because he ended up at the right time and place.
I always just assumed it was because it was an adventure for Link and not to go save the princess. I think I'm wrong, ultimately, cuz I never finished it. However, I think Link discovered who he was when no one is looking, and that's huge.
Probably because the focus is more on Link insofar that his blood can somehow be used for Ganon's ritual, and he has to prove himself in the end, unlike the last game wherein he just needed to rescue Zelda.

There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!
Link's adventure.
Also Zelda II is still in the title
Realistically it should be Link II- we should have named them all Link.
