This oft-repeated narrative, though comfortable, grossly distorts the long, rich history of philosophical debates about biological science. How can we do better, without misleading pioneer's chronicles, and make philosophers of biology aware of the history of their own field? I truly wonder... 2/2

It's certainly a still powerful founding myth - suppose one just needs to get more papers like @djnicholson.bsky.social 's 'Neither logical empiricism nor vitalism' on syllabi to counter the weight of the older PhilBio historiography.

Yeah, that's a good start, for sure! But I'm also thinking about something more wide-ranging. Perhaps a new intro textbook that, besides being useful for getting acquainted with #philbio topics, properly historicizes the practices, long-standing problems & debates, and contributors to our field?

Hi, John. Yes, it is a fantastic book that needs to be read more often! I was precisely thinking of something along those lines, but perhaps with a different (historical and philosophical) scope and a somewhat different choice of topics.
