Former masters course there was a book chapter or two that centered on this scientific-research, perhaps this is what it was alluding to as hierarchical would retain their titles and other faculty would be replaced by AI who could facilitate audiobooks video lectures in place of salaried humans

The article was interesting, as the professor was excited about using the class time that the AI-generated text/resource (comprised of her notes, readings, videos, etc.) would free her up in class to do thinking work (not lectures) & writing with students. Sounds like a flipped class with AI assist.

I don’t understand the difference between this and a lecture guide. Also, it doesn’t matter if the students engage with the material outside of class. 😭

It sounded to me like she decided to flip her classroom: instead of giving a lecture guide or prerecorded lectures… she uploaded it to an LLM/AI and let it format it for her? It sounds like all her resources. The AI angle/use seems to obscure what she’s doing in her course pedagogically.

I didn’t read it that way & I’m not upset that she’s used AI to organize her materials.

What I don’t understand, and what she doesn’t clarify, is how she’s going to use class time to teach differently. She says it, but there’s no clarity on implementation. How are students going to get the info?

More importantly, her work being uploaded and reusable in this capacity means other professors will be hired on with less job security because “you’re not even making your own materials for the class.”

True! I have seen colleges/universities where certain courses are pretty set, though: the incoming instructor must follow the syllabus. I suppose there are places to adjust… I wonder what the prevailing practices are for courses nowadays? Or maybe it varies by program?

If this were being run as an experiment comparing the outcomes of a class taught by AI to a class taught by seasoned professor, I might be interested to see the quantitative and qualitative results, but to just do this, with no clearly defined benefit to anyone makes no sense.

Wow. This is wildly disturbing. I can’t even imagine giving AI the important task of creating curriculum for my students…is it just me or does it feel like we are headed towards all those dystopian books and movies where AI takes over? 🫤

Why in the world would we want that?

AI has it's place, but it can't replace a human as a teacher. Subtleties are not it's strong suit.

Regurgitation of infor.ation, aggregation of content, etc. Are it's strong suit.

The prof is just feeding her course materials made during COVID (video lectures, assignments etc) into an A.I. platform to be formatted into a course text. It's not revolutionary and could have been done easily on Book Creator or Pressbooks or a Google site. It's a glorified course pack from 1990.
