From Susie Dent: A reminder of a pretty etymology to brighten the day. The ‘daisy’ takes its name from the Old English ‘dæges ēage’, ‘day’s eye’, because it opens its petals at dawn, and closes them again at dusk.

Just googled it, and got naturalist, artist + writer Denys Watkins-Pitchford (1905-90), who apparently included it as a quotation inside all his books. Though he supposedly got it from something his father copied "from a tombstone in a north-country churchyard". Fascinating!
