When stuff like The Lion King remake makes ludicrously amounts of money despite being critically panned, I always find it interesting to see how well a follow-up performs, especially in the opening weekend, as that's a good yardstick as to whether it was actually liked.

2019 was probably a blessing and a curse for Disney. They made several billion dollar movies, but a lot of them weren’t well regarded in hindsight, and they’ll never have a year as successful as that again.

I also feel like a lot of Marvel fatigue is not just about the quality of current marvel movies, it’s catch up from movies people didn’t like during the height of marvel. The Marvels is easily a hundred times better than captain marvel, but why show up to the sequel of a mediocre movie

It still angers me so much that the lion king remake technically became the highest grossing animated film of all time since it’s all cgi technically, and there’s no actual live action shots, it’s just photorealism

They're never doing hand-drawn animation again. They hardly retain any of that sort of talent now because they've been committed to that era being done and over for over 15 years now.

I dont even think the hand drawn animation controversy is the issue; the photo realism doesnt work when it’s focused on only plain animals + taking a movie w such rich expressions and reducing it to natgeo material wasn’t gonna work long term. Esp without the Elton John songs we all loved.

I meant CGI lions in a cartoon style. Like the new Tiana ride at Disneyland has a Frozen-style CGI Tiana that people have found jarring because the original Princess & The Frog was hand-drawn.

Sonic the hedgehog 3 was a heartbreaking beautiful follow up. Shadow’s story was very well done and the film had a great message about grief and dealing with pain. It’s well worth a watch

I just love the dichotomy of the film franchise where they heavily delayed the first movie to redesign the main character increasingly succeeding v the cash grab that undos some of the central themes in the original movie tanking.
