What’s especially galling is that the “free speech” violations of the left were simply people using their own speech to criticize others. Individuals can’t violate the first amendment. Now we have the government silencing opposing speech, which is a paradigmatic 1st amendment violation.

One of the founding texts of the American conservative movement, God and Man at Yale, is literally subtitled The Superstitions of "Academic Freedom". They were arguing that academic freedom was corrosive to American values 70+ years ago. If you missed that, that's on you.
