Constituents to Chuck Grassley: "Are you bringing back that guy from El Salvador?" Senior Citizen: “If I get an order to pay a ticket to pay $1200 and I just say ‘no’, does that stand up? Because he just got an order from the Supreme Court and he just said ‘screw it’” “I’M PISSED!”

trump is engaged in an open war against women who report domestic violence and assault and the media just don't consider it newsworthy. non profits that work on this are getting defunded left and right. the final nail in the coffin will be defunding legal services corp.

REPORTER: There are laws on the book that make it a criminal offense to harbor illegal immigrants, like sanctuary state leaders have been doing. Do you think they should be prosecuted and possibly put in prison? HOMAN: Absolutely. And hold tight on that one, because it's coming.

lol but at least the AP gets to sit in the briefing room and type what the president's representative lies about to them

Biden’s antisemitism envoy on deporting students: “I’m coming down right smack dab in the middle…I don’t oppose many of the things that are being done. I just wish they would be done more deftly.”

Just to remind everyone: this is *our* fucking money--locally raised tax dollars--that Congress simply won't let our government spend, for no reason other than spite. This is why DC needs statehood. But also, this is just petty, petty bullshit by House Republican leadership.

The damage insane Cold War spooks have done to the American psyche has been incalculable.

At a point where I really cannot take people who insist AI is neatly analogous to any other tech advance seriously. We are lobotomizing ourselves.

I don't know that we're ever going to come fully to terms with how preposterous all of this was. 30 "disinvitation incidents" out of all the speaking events that take place in a given year in a country with *nearly 4,000* degree granting institutions — this whole thing was a farce.

When I read Linz's "Perils of Presidentialism" in grad school in like ~2011, I asked the professor, "what prevents this from happening in the US?" and it was a litany of bullshit that doesn't hold anymore. It's here because presidential systems tend towards authoritarianism. Eventually.

The dangers of the features of the Constitution that may break the country — the potentially monarchical nature of the presidency, Senate apportionment — were not only long foreseen but discussed at the convention itself. We've been handed down a time bomb with the hope we'd know how to defuse it.

I often tell my students this Joan Robinson quote, and not as a joke “The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.”

That NYT column going around is interesting to me primarily because it seems like we're getting more mea culpas on wokeness from online weirdos than we are from mainstream writers, even though the latter are more responsible for spreading this kind of delusion than anyone.

Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create

Yup. They'll send a legitimately awful US citizen to CECOT, and anyone who criticizes it will be accused of supporting the awful person... and then they'll send someone slightly less awful. Eventually, they'll have established that they can send anyone.

Legal permanent resident of the U.S., showing up to apply for citizenship, with no allegations of criminal activity, is arrested and detained by masked police. This is fascism, and that is not a word I use lightly. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/n...

what exactly would be different? Garcia wasn't given a hearing or formal deportation hearings. Ignored and flouted habeas requests. What would stop them from claiming a citizen is a non-citizen without there being any procedure of due process? (Nothing)

"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"

Historians are going to remember The Atlantic as the most important magazine of the early 21st century. Just not in the way its editors hope.

this is the no fucking shit of all no fucking shits and yet barely anyone anywhere is saying it.

Tren de Aragua is a Cinderella story addition to the canon of American boogeymen. Even today, I could not tell you with confidence what it is; I am certain Trump himself doesn't really know.

Always and everywhere, ideological diversity means being obligated to make way for people from the center and right. There are anarchists here. There are Blue No Matter Who Dems. There are whole worlds of disagreement between. People have vicious fights on here every day. Doesn't matter.

Many things could be said here and were the first time this paragraph went around. As far as black is concerned, I've never capitalized the B myself. The have been zero difficulties arising from this choice. A lot of this amounts to people thinking their own cowardice is a grand social problem.

gen ai freezes all progress, creativity, and new thinking in place by recycling what has been, disallowing would could be. and what group of people might be motivated by that i wonder

Tech execs declaring all-out war on creators who don’t want their life’s work pillaged for profit

A huge honor to get to write something with my hero @naomiaklein.bsky.social. We wish it was a happier topic, but it's an urgent one. We dove deep into the apocalyptic fervor of the far right to issue a warning about the rise of End Times Fascism. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

The Trump regime is claiming tyrannical powers. Not an exaggeration, not hyperbole, not a partisan statement. The reality we now face.

I’m angry about many, many, aspects of Trumpism. And it’s not the top of my list, but I hate the amount of media (and mental) space occupied by absolute cranks, racists, and fools who have been promot because of their venality stupidity. If this is “meritocracy,” it is a meritocray of monsters.

I looked this guy up on linkedin and he's been at the SSA for 26 years. worked his way up from IT grunt to associate commissioner

Shame on Planned Parenthood of Arizona for dropping their trans patients because of threats from Trump. What happens when they make you stop providing abortions? Birth control? PReP? Gonna roll over then too? These orgs complying are cowardly.

If you get a bad visual — Dukakis, Dean, this — it's over. If multiple women accuse you of sexual harassment, you've still got a shot. A particular cadre of loyal Dems will defend you to the hilt.
